A Zimbabwean man, Eric Nyoni who is charged for the murder of his Motswana girlfriend will on Tuesday next week appear again before the Maun Magistrate’s Court for case status update.
The 35-year-old who has since been remanded in custody is alleged to have on the night of 12th October 2022 murdered his girlfriend, Kebatshabile Machaba at Sanyedi Ward in Maun.
Nyoni and the deceased who is the mother of his 1-year-old child are alleged to have on that fateful night at around 2300 hours had a misunderstanding leading to the accused person allegedly hitting the deceased with fists. The accused is then alleged to have left the deceased home and went out to entertainment.
Upon his return at around 5am the accused person found Machaba lying motionless and he then proceeded to Maun police station to report the matter. The deceased was then rushed to Letsholathebe II memorial hospital where she was certified dead, while Nyoni was subsequently arrested as the prime suspect of her murder.
Nyoni is also facing another count of illegal entry into the country.
State Prosecutor Khani Khani has previously applied for the accused to further be remanded in custody adding that they will call upon the Investigating Officer of the case who will further advance reasons why the accused person should not be granted bail.
Furthermore, Khani pleaded for the accused person to be remanded in custody as prosecution is awaiting post mortem results of the deceased which will establish the cause of the death.
The accused person who opted to use Nambia language which is spoken in Zimbabwe pleaded to be granted bail claiming that he left his 1-year-old daughter with the deceased unattended.
Presiding chief magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalu ordered prosecution to make a follow up on relatives who can take care of the child, and that if necessary they may engage a social worker.
