North West District Council Chairman Itumeleng Kelebetseng has said that the youth of North West are not just the future but are the driving force of today’s economy.
Kelebetseng said this when giving his keynote address during the Maun Business Expo this week.
He stated that in tourism, North West youth are redefining experiences and putting Botswana on the global map while in service provision they are revolutionising industries with technology and customer-driven solutions.
‘‘In manufacturing, you are proving that local production can compete on a national and international scale. In agriculture, you are securing our future with sustainable and innovative farming practices. Your energy, creativity, and adaptability set you apart, and your success is a testament to the power of youth entrepreneurship,’’ he said.
However, Kelebetseng expressed that they recognise that the business journey is not without challenges. He stated that access to funding, market penetration, and sustainability remain key hurdles.
Kelebetseng has however indicated that the true spirit of an entrepreneur is not measured by the obstacles they face, but by their ability to turn challenges into opportunities. He therefore stated that the event is a chance for the youth to network, learn, and showcase their ideas to potential investors and stakeholders who believe in their potential.
“The recognition and awards given here today are not just about winning; they are about acknowledging your perseverance and encouraging you to keep striving for excellence. To government and private sector stakeholders, let this be a reminder that investing in youth businesses is investing in the future of our economy,” he said.
He encouraged the stakeholders to work together to create an ecosystem that nurtures young entrepreneurs beyond the expo and the youth to take their business obligations seriously. Kelebetseng has urged those with loans to service them with fidelity.
One of the entrepreneurs, Director of Kwenaetsile Travel and Tours Thabo Maretlwaneng has encouraged the youth in business to believe in their vision and stay committed to their dreams in order for their businesses to thrive. Maretlwaneng noted that running a business comes with challenges and requires someone who is resilient. He encouraged them to utilise the expo to network, share their ideas and experiences.
Director of Sugar Dolls Beauty Salon and Spa Lindy Makakatela who scooped the award for Overall Best Exhibition Stall noted that since establishing her business in 2018, she encountered challenges but through hard work and determination she managed to succeed.
