Women’s National League Historic Season Kicks Off

Date:

Botswana women’s football entered a new chapter over the weekend as the inaugural Women’s National League officially kicked off, with teams across the country producing a mix of dominant victories and tightly contested encounters in the opening week of competition.

The first round of matches immediately showcased the intensity and ambition of the new league. In the Southern Stream, Zodiac Collabo Girls made a powerful statement with a resounding 13–0 win over Ghanzi Swallows, one of the standout results of the opening week. BDF XI FC were equally impressive, cruising to a 6–0 victory against Western Zebras, while Double Action continued the trend of commanding performances by defeating Royal Fighters 5–0. Gaborone United also enjoyed a convincing start, overcoming Jwaneng Galaxy 4–0, as Makgabz City edged El Pots 1–0 in a closely fought contest.

The Northern Stream offered a balance between competitiveness and attacking flair. Mafia Vision and Tawana Top Girls played to a 0–0 draw, reflecting the even match-ups beginning to take shape, while Orapa United claimed a narrow 2–1 victory over Nico United. Granada delivered one of the most emphatic results of the weekend with a 13–0 triumph over Tornado, matching the highest scoreline recorded in the opening round. Francistown United secured a 2–1 win against Tsabotlhe, and Western Dynamites recorded a solid 2–0 victory over Eyes on the Ball.

Beyond the opening-week results, the launch of the Women’s National League represents a historic milestone for football in Botswana. Recently unveiled by the Botswana Football Association (BFA) at Lekidi Football Centre, the league is the country’s first-ever structured national women’s competition. Its establishment marks a deliberate step towards raising standards, nurturing talent and creating sustainable pathways for players, coaches, referees and administrators.

The league brings together teams from across Botswana through the Northern and Southern Streams, reinforcing inclusivity and nationwide representation. Supported by FIFA, the competition is expected to play a central role in talent identification, player development and strengthening the national team’s pipeline.

As the inaugural season gets underway, the opening week has already underlined both the potential and the challenges of a growing women’s game. With strong performances, emerging rivalries and a clear development mandate, the Women’s National League has laid a promising foundation for the long-term growth and professionalisation of women’s football in Botswana.
