Women’s National Football League Intensifies

Date:

The inaugural Botswana Women’s National League continued to intensify over the weekend, with Week Six fixtures reshaping the standings in both the Northern and Southern Streams while shining a spotlight on the realities facing emerging clubs.

In the Northern Stream, Orapa United FC tightened their grip at the summit despite being held to a goalless draw by Tsabotlhe FC. The result keeps Orapa unbeaten after six matches with 16 points (5 wins, 1 draw), maintaining a steady four-point cushion at the top.

Western Dynamites FC, however, remain firmly in the title conversation despite suffering a 2–0 home defeat to Granada FC. The loss leaves them second on the log with 10 points from six matches. Nico United edged Eyes on the Ball FC 1–0, Tawana Top Girls thrashed Tornado Sporting 4–1, and Mafia Vision FC shared the spoils in a 1–1 draw with Francistown United FC.

Speaking after the weekend’s fixtures, Western Dynamites coach Tizhani Kangangwani said he remains proud of his team’s progress in their debut national campaign.

“To me I think the team is performing at their level best, looking at the fact that the team is starting in this national league for the first time and has so far made it to position two,” Kangangwani said.

He welcomed the introduction of the Women’s National League, saying it has brought more women to the forefront of the sport.

“The league’s introduction is welcome as it has helped more women come to the forefront and join the league, looking at what the league provides, with more even showing interest to join the team,” he added.

However, Kangangwani also highlighted the structural challenges facing teams in the North West. With players travelling long distances from areas such as Gumare and Shakawe to honour fixtures, logistical and financial pressures continue to weigh heavily on clubs.

He revealed that Western Dynamites currently operate without sponsorship, forcing the team to supplement club activities from their own income. He appealed to potential sponsors to support their efforts, noting that the P50,000 grant provided by the league has already been exhausted.

“Women’s sport requires a lot more funds to assist women in the sport,” he said, emphasising the need for sustained financial backing to ensure players are in proper condition to compete.

In the Southern Stream, BDF XI FC climbed to the top of the table with 16 points after securing a 2–0 win over Gantsi Swallows FC. Gaborone United FC, who boast an extraordinary defensive record with no goals conceded in four matches, remain second on 12 points, though their fixture against Double Action FC did not produce a result this week.

Zodiac Collabo Girls FC strengthened their position with a convincing 4–0 victory over EL Pots FC, while Makgabz City FC defeated Royal Fighters FC 2–0. The match between Jwaneng Galaxy FC and Western Zebras FC was also listed without a recorded score.

Six weeks into its historic first season, the Women’s National League is beginning to reflect both competitive ambition and developmental growing pains. While clubs like Orapa United and BDF XI set the early pace, teams such as Western Dynamites illustrate the determination driving the women’s game forward despite financial and logistical constraints.

Launched earlier this year by the Botswana Football Association as the country’s first-ever structured national women’s competition, the league was designed to raise standards, nurture talent and strengthen the pipeline to national teams. As the season unfolds, it is clear that beyond the goals and points, the competition is also revealing the resilience and commitment underpinning the growth of women’s football in Botswana.
