Maun’s Western Dynamites ladies’ team (The Hippos) has made yet another piece of Nhabe Women’s Football League history after walloping their opponents the Lords FC and Red Stars at the regional playoffs that were held in Gumare on the 12th-13th April 2025.
Dynamites defeated the Lords from Shakawe Stream 3-1 in their first game and also walloped Gumare’s Red Stars 5-0 in their final match of the playoffs. The Lords SC took position two with three points while Red Stars took the third position without earning any points.
The Hippos’ triumph means that they will be advancing to the DTCB Northern Block playoffs for the third time in a row, which this year will be held on the 10th -11th May 2025 in Kasane.
Western Dynamites will face winners from Francistown, Boteti and Chobe regions, however at this moment champions from these four regions have not yet been revealed as the league games are still under continuation.
In an interview, Western Dynamites Coach Tizhani Zibochwa has told Times Sport that his team was ready for the competition, noting that the players were fit to play and their mood was on top notch.
‘‘Psychologically they were ready, through determination and dedication they managed to fight even though the ground was not good,’’ he said.
Zibochwa stated that this season their intention is to advance from the DTCB Northern Block playoffs to the DTCB Top 4 Tournament since they have rectified their previous mistakes. He said that they will be working hard to achieve their goal.
Zibochwa has lamented that this season the playoffs were not fully prepared for as compared to the last season because there were some delays from Botswana Football Association (BFA) to release mobilizing fee for the teams to prepare themselves.
‘‘Actually they wanted to postpone the playoffs nevertheless the message for continuation then came late on Thursday as such we had to travel on Friday,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, in the previous season Dynamites had failed to advance to the DTCB Top 4 tournament after being defeated 2-0 by Tawana Top Girls from Boteti region in the final match of the DTCB Northern Block playoffs which were held in Francistown on the 1st-2nd June 2024.
Zibochwa had indicated that their loss was caused by fatigue as his players played many games during the same day therefore, they were physical tired, which impacted their ability to perform well. He had stated that playing two games during the day was not an optimal option, hence they had proposed to BFA for each team to play one game per day.
