The Vultures national men’s rugby team faced a tough test on Saturday afternoon as they took on the African champions, Zimbabwe Sables, in a high-stakes international friendly at the Harare Sports Club.
Despite the 80–12 defeat, the fixture marked a symbolic step forward for Botswana Rugby, showcasing resilience, potential, and the dawn of a new era.
The match kicked off at 14:30 before a lively crowd, with Zimbabwe showing their experience and cohesion early on. The Sables’ dominance was evident in the scoreboard, but Botswana’s players showed flashes of promise throughout the encounter, earning praise from both fans and rugby analysts.
Though the scoreboard reflected Zimbabwe’s superiority, the Vultures’ head coach, Andrew Paxinos, remained upbeat about the experience and the growth it inspired.
“The Vultures performed well against a well-drilled and established team, who are the current African champions,” said Paxinos after the match. He continued, “they were very complimentary about our performance, and there is a lot to take away from the experience.”
Paxinos emphasized that the encounter was a learning platform. “It was a great learning opportunity for the whole team—players, coaches, and management included. Good conversations were had at all levels, giving us guidance and ideas for the way forward, and relationships were strengthened.”
Despite the loss, individual performances stood out, catching the eye of seasoned observers. “The response from those who have played the game at this level has been very positive and encouraging. There were some great individual performances, and the management team is very grateful to Zimbabwe Rugby for this opportunity to grow,” Paxinos added.
The Harare match may not have delivered the result Botswana hoped for, but it succeeded in affirming The Vultures’ ambition to elevate their game on the continental stage. As the team returns home, the message is clear: this was not a setback but a stepping stone. The national side is gaining momentum, and fixtures like these are forging the path forward.
With continued support and regional engagement, Botswana Rugby is laying the groundwork for a stronger presence in African rugby, one match at a time.
