Underprivileged Learners Get A Helping Hand

Date:

In a gesture of community support, Shandong Taikai Power Engineering, donated 20 school uniforms to underprivileged learners at Maun Senior Secondary School this past Tuesday.

The donation event brought together teachers, students, and project representatives in a shared celebration of compassion and community impact. Ultimately, the donations were set to benefit 20 learners, of 10 girls and 10 boys, consisted of shirts, skirts, trousers and shoes amounting to an approximated P10 000.

Speaking during the ceremony, Project Manager Zhang Lei emphasized the deeper values behind the gesture.

“This project has always been more than just logistics or deliverables. It’s been about people — about identifying real needs in our community and finding ways to meet them with compassion, respect, and dignity,” said Lei.

Shandong Taikai Power Engineering was engaged by Botswana Power Corporation for the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of an additional 1×20MVA 132/11KV transformer and all associated works at the Maun Substation. The project began in August 2024 in Boseja Ward and is being carried out under the supervision of SMEC Consultant.

In line with Botswana’s Citizen Economic Empowerment (CEE) policy, the company has not only complied with health and safety standards but has also worked to uplift the local economy.

“Through our CEE, we have engaged local subcontractors, service providers, and created employment opportunities for Maun residents and locals at large,” Lei explained.

The school uniform donation, while modest in size, resonated with all in attendance for its symbolism.

“The donations we’re handing over today represent more than physical items. They are a symbol of solidarity, of hope, and of what can be accomplished when people work together towards a common good,” added Lei.

The significance of the donation was beautifully captured by one of the school’s learners, who addressed her peers and guests with an emotional message about the power of a uniform.

“Uniform makes all students equal regardless of their backgrounds,” she said, a statement that was met with applause and nods of agreement from the crowd.

In closing, Lei encouraged the spirit of unity and giving: “Let us be reminded that real change starts with people, showing up, giving back, and believing in better. Together, we can make an impact and do so much more.”
