Tournament Brings Tennis Best To Maun

Date:

Maun played host to a tri-day thrilling senior tennis tournament on Friday, showcasing top talents from across the nation in both singles and doubles categories. The highly anticipated event drew players from various regions, offering a diverse mix of experienced veterans and emerging talents.

Wellington Sibanda, coach of the BMC Tennis Team, emphasised the importance of such events in fostering the growth of the sport.

“Tennis is a growing sport in the nation, and we thought it was best to bring seniors together in a competitive environment. They will face good competition from a wide range of players, from experienced to less experienced,” said Sibanda.

The tournament kicked off on Friday with intense singles matchups that stretched late into the night, featuring fierce competition in both the men’s and women’s categories. Among some notable players in the women’s division was Maun native and BMC Sports Complex athlete, Winnie Mooketsi. In the men’s category, University of Botswana Tennis Team Captain, Kazeriua Uanivo, impressed with his skillful performance.

Day two saw the doubles competition ignite the excitement of a thrilled audience. Teams from the University of Botswana, Botswana Defence Force, BMC Sports Club, and independent participants from Serowe, Gaborone, and beyond, brought their A-game. The energy on the court was palpable, as players demonstrated athleticism, agility, and endurance, captivating spectators with every point.

The tournament reached its climax on the third day, concluding with an awards ceremony where a total of P7,700 was distributed as prize money. Winners of the singles competition took home P1,300, while doubles champions received P1,000 each.

In the women’s singles, Anele Maplanka triumphed over Neo German to claim victory. The women’s doubles saw the pairing of Neo P. German and Anele Maplanka emerge as winners. In the men’s singles, Oratile Rabothaalo outlasted Olepile Oye, while the men’s doubles title went to Freddy Boang and Pakang Gogannekgosi, who defeated Olepile Oye and Hamilton Llewellyn in a thrilling final.

Reflecting on the tournament, UB team captain Uanivo stated, “This is the first time I am attending this tournament since I started tennis, and it is a great platform. Some players in our team have never had any experience playing competitively, so this is good for building that experience, whether we win or lose.”

Despite falling short in her singles match, Mooketsi expressed determination for the future. “I feel like I did not give my all in the last singles game, and unfortunately, I did not succeed. But I know what I am capable of, and next time, I will be better.”

Sibanda capped off the event by noting its success. “This tournament was a success in its own right. We did not have a sponsor this year, but thanks to the love most players have for the game, we managed to create a great tournament. This shows that Botswana has a lot of potential for growth in the sport.”

The Maun tennis tournament proved to be an exciting and competitive showcase of the nation’s tennis talent, signaling a bright future for the sport in Botswana.
