This week, the Botswana Guides Association (BOGA) held its Annual General Meeting under the theme: “Tourism Sustainability Mindset”. The question is, who is BOGA and what does this theme mean? BOGA is a non-government association whose aim is to promote the development of the locally based tour and safari industry in Botswana providing employment opportunities for the local people.
BOGA works towards on-going improvement and maintenance of high standards, professionalism and ethics of the tour and safari industry in Botswana. This theme therefore suggests that BOGA members and all their stakeholders should adopt a mindset that promotes sustainable tourism development in their activities.
Sustainable tourism refers to types of travel where tourism’s environmental, social, and economic impacts are factored in and where relevant adjustments are made to minimize these negative consequences. Sustainable tourism considers the needs of travellers and host communities, local businesses, and the natural world. The Okavango Delta is the main tourism destination where BOGA undertakes their activities.
The Okavango Delta supports the world’s largest remaining elephant population as well as lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, hundreds of species of birds, and much more. One of the unique characteristics of the site is that the annual flooding from the River Okavango occurs during the dry season, with the result that the native plants and animals have synchronized their biological cycles with these seasonal rains and floods.
The Okavango Delta is thus renowned for its incredible wildlife, with some of the most sought-after species, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and many species of antelope. The delta is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 450 species recorded in the area. As a result of this rich flora and fauna, the Okavango Delta has become one of the key tourism destinations in Southern Africa. Some of the tourism activities to try in the Okavango Delta include game drive, guided bush walks, mokoro or canoe safaris, motorboating, scenic flights, camping, fishing.
BOGA’s theme thus speaks to a tourism industry that meets the needs of present travellers without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It suggests a responsible management of resources, environmental conservation, and socio-economic benefits for local communities. The themes suggest the following:
a. Leadership and Advocacy:
Tourism operators like BOGA can take a leadership role in shaping the industry’s sustainability mindset by adopting sustainable business practices, advocating for policies that promote sustainability, and influencing tourist behaviour.
b. Certification Programs: Introduce certification programs that recognize operators/BOGA members committed to sustainable tourism. This can serve as a selling point to attract conscious travellers.
c. Collaboration: BOGA should encourage collaboration between tourism operators, government, NGOs, and local communities – this is critical to create a shared vision for sustainable tourism development in Botswana.
Sustainable tourism mindset can elevate Botswana’s tourism industry, ensuring that it thrives while preserving the rich cultural and natural heritage for future generations. By adopting these principles, tourism operators like those with BOGA can contribute to Botswana’s sustainable development while creating lasting positive impacts for both the environment and local communities.
