Date:

  • Kgosi Tawana Moremi II appoints Kealetile Deputy Paramount Chief
  • She returns hardly five months after leaving office as Batawana regent
  • Position fell vacant following retirement of Pringle Dithapo
  • Senior Chief Representative vacancy  to be filled

Hardly five months after leaving office as Batawana regent, Kealetile Moremi is set to return to the Batawana Kgotla, this time as Deputy Paramount Chief of Batawana. This was announced by her Kealetile’s brother, and Kgosikgolo Tawana Moremi II in a Kgotla meeting this week.

Kealetile’s appointment is aimed at filling the post, which fell vacant following the retirement of   of Kgosi Bringle Dithapo.

The appointment comes after Tawana himself returned for his throne few months ago after an almost two-decade period in the political field. While pursuing his political career Kealetile was holding fort for his brother since 2003 until recently when she made way for his return.

“After taking this decision I passed it through my uncles and Basimane ba Kgosi for advice who gave it a go ahead. I am now passing it to Morafe to get their views,” Tawana told his tribe during a consultative kgotla meeting.

In response majority of Batawana welcomed the decision and expressed their delight to have Kealetile returning to the Kgotla.

Among them was Kethobogile Wasinda who applauded Kealetile for having laid a solid foundation during her tenure as regent said her appointment as deputy will help Tawana to smoothly continue with where she left.

“For the past years we had issues that we were discussing with Kealetile, so her appointment as the deputy Paramount Chief will save our time from starting things afresh with Kgosi Tawana,” Kedidimetse said.

For her part Mariam Tladi who also shared the same sentiments appreciated the Moremi siblings for their harmony indicating that after standing in for Kgosi Tawana, Kealetile handed over the throne without any hustle.

Kgato Kedidimetse is however of the view that Kealetile should not deputise his younger brother arguing that Tawana will not be able to freely send her around for official duties.

Meanwhile Tawana has also announced that they will be filling the Senior Chief Representative position which has been vacant since the retirement of Kgosi Charlie Letsholathebe. Kgosi Tawana indicated that the position will be filled through a promotion from the internal Dikgosi adding that this will create another position from the bottom which they also intend to fill.

He noted that though the Ngamiland population has increased and needs an increase of Dikgotla and Dikgosana, adding that government is however currently out of budget to facilitate that. He also indicated that they also have a backlog of Kgotla cases which needs more Dikgosi to assist solve them.
