Teen Arrested Over Chukumuchu Fatal Stabbing

Date:

An 18-year-old man from Chukumuchu Village in the Okavango District has been arrested in connection with the alleged stabbing to death of a 22-year-old man following a misunderstanding at a local drinking spot.

The two men, who are reportedly from Leseding Ward in Chukumuchu, are said to have been at the drinking spot when an argument broke out between them.

Confirming the incident, Shakawe Acting Station Commander, Assistant Superintendent Babinang Banohi said the disagreement escalated when the 18-year-old allegedly grabbed a sharp object and stabbed the 22-year-old on the collarbone.

The incident occurred on August 5 around 5pm and was reported to police at around 18:00. Banohi said witnesses who were at the drinking spot rushed the injured man to a local clinic for medical assistance, only to find that there was no nurse at the facility at the time.

The witnesses then contacted the police and the village social worker, informing them of what had happened and requesting assistance. According to Banohi, the social worker responded to the call and drove to assist the group, transporting the injured man to Gani Clinic for further medical attention.

However, the victim reportedly died shortly before reaching the clinic. He was subsequently taken to JP Kavindama Memorial Hospital in Shakawe, where a medical doctor certified him dead.

Police have since arrested the 18-year-old suspect as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue. Banohi has cautioned members of the public against resorting to violence when faced with disagreements, particularly in situations where alcohol may be involved.

He urged people to exercise restraint and avoid confrontations, noting that arguments can quickly escalate into physical violence with serious or fatal consequences.

The police also encouraged members of the public who witness violent confrontations or feel that a situation is getting out of control to seek assistance from the police or other responsible community structures before matters escalate.

Banohi further appealed to community members to cooperate with investigators by providing any information that could assist in establishing the circumstances surrounding the death.

The incident highlights the potentially fatal consequences of disputes that escalate into violence, with police continuing to encourage members of the public to resolve disagreements peacefully and avoid taking matters into their own hands. The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.
