Tawana Land Board Condemns Self Demarcation

Date:

It has recently come to the attention of Tawana Land Board that some individuals are engaging in self demarcation of residential plots in areas of Polokabatho, Matshwane, Matsaudi and Mochaba with the expectation that the board will recognise, register and allocate these plots to them.

This was revealed by Tawana Land Board chairperson, Reamogetse Yakenge who strongly advised members of the community to immediately cease all self-demarcation activities in the stated areas or any other location within the Batawana tribal territory.

Addressing a media briefing recently, Yakenge has however acknowledged locals’ concerns that it took so long without them being allocated lands especially in Maun, as this is said to be the main reason raised by those who are self demarcating.

Earlier on Friday last week, the Maun Sub Land Board Chairman, Ogaufi Monamisi addressed Polokabatho community about illegal self demarcation by some members of the public cautioning them to desist from such acts.

Later on, during the press conference Yakenge also encouraged the public to follow the proper channels when applying for plots to avoid legal consequences and future disputes.

“We emphasise that land allocations follow established procedure, processes designed to ensure fairness, transparency and orderly development. Members of the public are therefore encouraged to follow the proper channels when applying for plots.”

She reminded them that the old process whereby people used to find themselves space for allocation by the board was long stopped in June 2012. She cautioned them about the consequences of self demarcation and allocations which may include demolition of structures, fine or imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the chairperson has revealed that the Maun Sub Land Board has begun the process of demarcating about 2330 plots for allocation. This as she acknowledged that it has taken too long without allocating plots in the Maun Sub Land Board jurisdiction.

According to her, the board will be demarcating in five villages of Phuduhudu (490 plots), Shorobe (241), Sankyo (233), Samedupi (441) and Polokabatho (850). Further to that, she indicated that 75 plots will be profiled in Mochaba pending allocation.

“Upon conclusion of this demarcation survey request will be compiled and submitted to department of survey and land mapping for thorough examinations and approval. Once approved, the process will proceed to the registration of plots with the Deeds Registry and the Land Information System (LIS).”

She indicated that only after these steps are finalised will the plots be allocated through a transparent vetting process for applicants on the Waiting List.

The chairperson noted, “we remain dedicated to ensure fair and transparent land allocation while working to meet the needs of our growing population. We encourage our stakeholders and community members to stay informed and engage us as we continue to implement this crucial initiative.”

She added that the approved Maun Development Plan 2023-2043 is also expected to produce close to 10 thousand plots.  The board’s acting secretary, Kesego Kgarathi has revealed that they are currently awaiting for the plan to be availed so that they can proceed with allocations.
