Community members have been encouraged to take full advantage of a debt amnesty campaign by Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) aimed at cushioning customers with outstanding water bills dating back to December 2024.
The initiative which began in April 2025 and will run until 30 June 2025 comes amid ongoing efforts by the corporation to manage operational sustainability and support consumers during economic strain.
“The sale means if a customer pays half of what they owe from December 2024 going backwards, the other half will be cleared but this is only valid if the customer also settles their current year’s bill in full,” WUC Customer Care Consultant-Commercial Services Department, Onkeme Ramaxao explained.
He said this during a kgotla meeting addressed by Member of Parliament for Maun North, Dumelang Saleshando in Moeti this week.
Ramaxao encouraged community members to take full advantage of the temporary relief to avoid accumulating further debt and possible service interruptions.
Through the campaign, WUC aims to tackle its customer debt, which exceeded P1.55 billion as of February 28 this year. Of this figure, domestic customer debt stood at over P833 million, while government accounted total about P501 million and business debts followed at over P153 million with local councils rounding out the list with over P62 million.
Areas with the highest debts were said to be Gaborone and Francistown followed by Mochudi, Kanye and Molepolole.
Meanwhile, Ramaxao emphasized the importance of staying on top of water payments, reminding customers of WUC’s 90-day policy. “If a water bill is not paid in 90 days, the customer is liable for disconnection as per the regulations and we urge everyone to pay monthly to avoid disruption,” he said.
Ramaxao further urged community members to update their Know Your Customer (KYC) details with Water Utilities Corporation, noting that many customers miss out on monthly billing notifications and essential services simply because their contact information is outdated.
“Even if you don’t have a smartphone, once your information is updated, you’ll still receive your monthly billing through SMS or other accessible means as It is important that every customer stays informed to avoid unnecessary disruptions,” he said.
