Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation’s Grant To Improve Public Healthcare

Date:

  • $50 million for maternal, child health, and non-communicable diseases programmes

In a major stride toward improving public healthcare, the Ministry of Health has secured a landmark grant of USD 50 million (approximately P700 million) from the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation.

The five-year grant is aimed at strengthening Botswana’s maternal, child health, and non-communicable diseases programmes.

According to a press release issued by the ministry, an initial disbursement of USD 10 million (about P135 million) has already been received, marking the start of the first year of implementation in November 2025.

The grant follows high-level engagements earlier this year between President Duma Boko, Minister of Health Dr. Stephen Modise, and representatives of the Foundation. The discussions centred around forging a strategic partnership to transform Botswana’s health sector with a particular focus on maternal health.

“This generous contribution will enable Botswana to strengthen maternal and primary healthcare systems across the country,” the Ministry said, adding that the initiative is expected to significantly reduce maternal deaths and improve pregnancy and childbirth outcomes.

As part of the grant’s focus, the Ministry will work to enhance access to family planning services by ensuring the availability of modern contraceptives and related medicines across all health facilities. The funding will also support policy reforms and the development of integrated service standards that promote safer pregnancies.

With cancer cases especially cervical and breast cancer on the rise in Botswana, the grant will further aid in boosting prevention strategies, early detection, and timely treatment for affected patients.

The Ministry highlighted the current maternal mortality rate of 155 per 100,000 live births (as of 2023), which it aims to reduce to the national target of 70 per 100,000 live births. Similarly, the under-five mortality rate is expected to be halved from 28.4 to 14 per 1,000 live births through the implementation of this grant.

In the broader scope, the grant is projected to improve Botswana’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) index from the current 55 (2021) to 75, supporting the country’s vision for equitable and accessible healthcare for all.

The Ministry of Health expressed its gratitude to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, noting that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to protecting the lives of women and children while advancing the nation’s health goals.
