Shakawe Police Report Peaceful Holidays!

Date:

  • despite fewer incidents

Police in Shakawe have reported that the festive season was peaceful with only a few isolated incidents of crime reported.

Shakawe Police Station Commander, Superintendent Alec Keikwaletse, said overall crime levels remained low during the holidays, a development he attributed to good community behaviour and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

He revealed that police registered a murder incident on the 31st of December in which a woman was found dead at her home with a stab wound to the chest. Superintendent Keikwaletse said investigations are ongoing, but no suspects have been arrested to date.

Keikwaletse also highlighted another tragic incident involving a crocodile attack in Kauxi village where a 26-year-old woman was snatched by a crocodile while taking pictures by the river. He warned residents to be extremely cautious when walking near river banks, noting that the river is home to dangerous aquatic animals.

“The public must avoid unnecessary movement along the river, especially during this season,” he cautioned.

Further, he noted that no robberies were recorded during the festive period, except for one incident of theft that occurred on the 29th of December, at Shakawe River Lodge. In that incident, a money box containing about P10,000 was stolen.

He revealed that witnesses reported the suspects were wearing balaclavas and were seen holding what appeared to be a short gun. However, no arrests have been made so far, and investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

He urged members of the public to continue maintaining good conduct and to work closely with the police by reporting suspicious activities, as community cooperation remains key to maintaining peace and safety in the area.

Meanwhile, the superintendent warned that road conditions in the area posed a serious risk to motorists if caution is not observed. Keikwaletse explained that the tarred road from Gumare to Mohembo is still under construction, and recent heavy rains have worsened the situation.

He said the temporary side roads that motorists have been using have developed deep potholes, many of which are filled with water, making it difficult for drivers to judge their depth. “The condition of the road is dangerous, especially after the rains. Motorists need to reduce speed and remain alert at all times to avoid accidents,” he said, adding that failure to exercise caution could easily result in serious road traffic incidents
