Seza Identifies Land For Sowa Chemical Manufacturing Hub

Date:

The Special Economic Zone Authority (SEZA) in collaboration with Sowa Town Council has earmarked a piece of land to set up the chemical manufacturing hub. This as three investors have shown interest in setting up in the township.

Special Economic Zone Authority (SEZA) Chief Executive officer Lonely Mogara disclosed this last Thursday in Sowa Town, while touring Botash mine with the Minister of trade and entrepreneurship Tiroeaone Ntsima

“The feasibility study for this special economic zone was completed late last year, and Sowa Town council has identified a parcel of land where the chemical manufacturing hub will be set up. Therefore, plans and efforts are in motion to develop the area.

Further, since Sowa has been declared an economic zone, infrastructure such as water, ICT and other necessary amenities will be upgraded to meet the necessary standards. Availability of water in Sowa Town is a challenge, but it will be addressed,” explained Mogara.

“So far we have investors who are keen in setting here and to show their seriousness, we have signed agreements with them, and without going much into details, since we have signed non-disclosure agreements, all l say is the companies are very much eager to do business in Botswana.”

Minister of trade and entrepreneurship, Tiroeaone Ntsima reiterated government’s support to ensure a chemical manufacturing hub is up and running in Sowa Town.

“From our end as government not much monetary support is required. All we need to do is to be an enabler, fast tracking issuing of necessary licences which investors need. So, they set up as soon as possible. Political will and support were lacking in the past years, but this will certainly change with this new government.”

Minister Ntsima was optimistic that a chemical manufacturing Economic zone would set up soon.

“Given the longevity of Botash mine, having an economic zone in this part of the country, is worth pursuing.”

Botash Acting Managing Director Othusitse Seokamo highlighted the company’s commitment to further develop their products.

“Botash has always had keen interest in Sowa Town being declared an economic zone. Our products form a base in the value chain production of chemicals and other products which can be developed in this Special economic zone. As a mine we can assure provision of the raw materials required for further processing by companies in this zone.”

“Secondly, when SEZA was working on the feasibility study, Botash was fully represented. And we are excited to see that dream develop into projects that will provide employment opportunities and economic value in our area,” continued Seakoma.

Establishing a chemical manufacturing hub is Sowa Town is expected to attract investors in food and chemical manufacturing, fertiliser producing companies and other array of enterprises.

Botash acting CEO pointed out that Sowa Town is easily accessible by road and rail.

“The geographical location of this Zone has an added advantage when it comes the distribution of the finishe products. We also willing to share the infrastructure which we have established in our facility.”
