‘Wolfsburg Sporting Club,’ a newly established ladies’ soccer team based in Sehithwa Village has been unveiled and is set to participate in the Nhabe Regional Women’s Football League.
The club was established last month by Monty Masalila, a Botswana Football Association BFA/CAF License B holder who is also a teacher at Ngami Junior Secondary School, together with his colleague, Meja Moremedi.
The team is mostly constituted by players from surrounding villages of Toteng, Komana, Bodibeng, Botlhatlhogo and Kareng, as well as students from the school.
The team’s unveiling event over the weekend was highlighted by the ladies teams’ tournament which pitted four clubs from the Maun stream women’s football – Cubs FC, Moeti United Sporting Club, Western Dynamites and the newbies against each other.
Masalila, who coaches the new club told Times Sport that through the team, they aim to nurture and develop female players, this after realising that many of their students are talented and do exceptionally well in sport.
The unveiling soccer tournament was hosted under the theme, ‘our time is now, our rights our future.’
Masalila explained that the idea was to sensitise the public that while girl child has long been neglected, time has now come to have deliberate development strategies to bring them on board.
“We want the girl child to have options on what they want to do to earn a living. To also equip them on health education so that they can properly take care of themselves and serve in the world of football,’ said Masalila.
He said they envisage self-reliant female footballers and future coaches who will contribute significantly to the country’s economy through soccer. He added that they want to see their players retained in the system of play especially in the Nhabe region and the national league.
Meanwhile the new club came third in the unveiling tournament after it was defeated 5-2 by Cubs FC during the semi-finals. It walloped Moeti SC 3-0 in the loser’s final through the penalties following a one all draw.
The tournament was won by Western Dynamites after beating Cubs FC 2-0 in the finals. Cubs SC took position two followed by Wolfsburg SC on position three. The winners of the tournament received price money of P1200.00, second position got P900.00 while the third position received an amount of P500.00.
