Botswana’s decorated Professional Boxer Kagiso ‘Reptile’ Bagwasi has made history when he knocked out South African boxer Boyd Allen in the sixth round to claim the IBO All-Africa junior-middleweight title at The Galleria, Sandton, South Africa on Saturday evening.
The 30-year old Bagwasi’s powerful left hand punch knock downed Allen before the end of the 10 rounds anticipated bout, leaving the referee with no option but to stop the match. The IBO All-Africa junior-middleweight title marked a significant milestone for Bagwasi’s career who currently trains under Drad Boxing Gym.
However, Bagwasi’s countryman, Tefo Letshikgwane was knocked out by South Africa’s Tiisetso Matikinga in the fourth round of the anticipated six round Bantamweight 53.5kg which he was fighting in for the first time. Letshikgwane who is promoted by Bond Boxing Promotions is the current super bantamweight national champion 55.32kg.
In an interview, Professional Boxing Association of Botswana (PBAB) President Seroba Binda expressed that he was impressed by Bagwasi’s victory as they are one step into World Rankings. Binda stated the moment is a testament to the hard work put in day after day in the gym, in the ring, and behind the scenes.
“What an incredible journey it has been! I’m truly impressed by the grit, passion, and dedication every member of our boxing promoters, boxers and others continue to show. Today, we proudly stand just one step away from making our mark on the world stage. Let’s stay focused, stay united, and continue to fight with heart. The world is watching, and we’re ready to show them what we’re made of. Let’s keep punching forward — the world rankings are within reach,” said Binda.
Binda had previously told Times Sport that that their local boxers are always ready and they always keep fit in their preparations for such competitions. He then indicated that the duo maintained training tactics and did a research about the boxers they will be fighting against in preparation for the competition.
‘‘This competition is very important because it is IBO Africa title, it is only contested by African boxers, the winner will be rated in the top 10 of the IBO, putting him at the door of fighting for the IBO world title,’’ he said.
Binda had noted that among all the bouts Bagwasi’s fight is very important because if he wins he would be crowned the Africa champion and that would place Botswana in the world map. He stated that Bagwasi’s win would also attract international boxing promotion companies to Botswana.
