Remote Schools Get Computer Labs To Expand Gigital Access

Date:

The fully-fleshed computer laboratory at Sankoyo Primary School has been highly appreciated as it will expose learners in remote areas to digital technology from a grassroots level.

First Lady Kaone Boko recently handed over the life-changer computer lab comprising of 30 computers, a printer, a projector, a high-speed broadband internet connection, 30 tables, and some chairs. It was established by the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) alongside other partners including Mascom, Botswana Telecommunications Centre (BTC), and the Ministry of Communications and Innovation among others.

As BOCRA and other partners continue to spread digital technology services across the North West, they have also officially launched a similar digital centre at Makakung Primary School. Prior to the digital centre facility handover, BOCRA and partners embarked on a journey of facilitating students in the North West region, particularly those situated in remote areas such as Makakung, Khwai, Mababe, and Sankoyo, with Information, Communication and Technology amongst other modern technological skills.

When handing over the facility, Boko applauded BOCRA and partners for considering students in remote areas by exposing them to digital technology from a grassroots level. Boko said every student deserves a secured future, access to good quality education, and access to modern technology. She noted that as education and knowledge have always been considered the greatest equalisers, so is digital technology in this modern era.

She stated that all students, regardless of their geographical locations, should keep up with modern learning techniques so that they remain relevant and competitive. The First Lady further emphasized that modern technology shapes every aspect of life, therefore access to technology unlocks full student potential.

Meanwhile, in his remarks, Sankoyo Primary School Head Andy Sesio appreciated that this generous act will go a long way in improving and transforming teaching and learning at the institution. He says over the past years, his students have been eager to explore the world of technology but the hindrance was a lack of proper tools and machines. Sesio was delighted that the facility will empower learners with digital skills, adding it will also enable them to conduct proper research as well as allow them to remain competent in the 21st century.

He added that the laboratory will impact upcoming generations of learners, both in Sankoyo and surrounding communities. Furthermore, he mentioned that an investment in education pays the best interest, adding that improving the learning conditions of students births academic excellence in their schools. Sesio added that the centre will also promote creativity, innovation, and knowledge generation.

The school-head therefore assured the First Lady and other stakeholders that they will take good care of the facility to ensure it is sustainable and beneficial to both teachers and learners.
