Rape Cases Dominate Holiday Crime Statistics


  • Three incidents of rape registered in Maun
  • Two of the cases involve 12 and 15 year old girls
  • Some of the suspected rapists are still at large

The recent independence holidays were marred with incidents of criminality in Maun and surrounding areas, with murder case, three incidents of rape and two road accidents recorded over the long weekend.

According to Maun Police Station Commander, Superintendent Chenamo Orateng a 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 47-year-old man on the 29th September in Boseja Ward. Orateng said the suspect was arrested and investigations on the matter are still ongoing.

In another rape incident Orateng revealed that a 15 years old girl was also allegedly raped by an unknown assailant on the night of October 1st at Botshabelo ward. The incident reportedly occurred when the form 1 student was in company of her fellow friends on their way to buy food at a local bar. Orateng said investigations are ongoing to apprehend the culprit who is still at large.

Still on the same day, Orateng further revealed that a 36 years old woman of Samedupi village was raped by an unknown person at her home. The incident is said to have occurred at around 6 pm in her house. Investigations are ongoing as the victim is aware of the person who might have committed the offence,” Orateng said.

Orateng revealed that they are also investigating a suspected murder case involving a 33-year-old man of Boseja Ward that happened on October 1. The deceased, who was stabbed with a sharp object by unknown assailants arrived home on a critical condition and was then rushed to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital where he was certified dead.

“We are in search of those who murdered the deceased person and we are therefore pleading with the public and friends of the deceased to help us with the lead to arrest the offenders,’ he said.

He also revealed that a serious accident happened after Komana Village when a 37-year-old man lost control of the car which overturned and left him injured. He was rushed to Nyangabwe Referral Hospital in Francistown where he is receiving treatment.

“The car had 5 passengers who were rushed to Letsholathebe hospital with minor injuries and were later released the following day,” he said. 

Orateng revealed that they received another accident report on the 30th September in which a 30-year-old man of Boseja ward was hit by a car and sustained minor fracture on his leg and is recovering at Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital.

Meanwhile in Sehithwa police recorded one accident, assault and suicide incidents that occurred during the holidays.

According to Sehithwa Police Station Commander Superintendent Nshaki Mabophiwa a 27 year old man of Toteng village was found by his girlfriend hanging in his house on the 2nd of October.

Mabophiwa said that the deceased who did not show any sign that he was somehow troubled did not leave any suicide note behind.

Mabophiwa further revealed that a 22-year-old woman of Kareng was stabbed multiple times by her 28-year-old ex-lover on the morning of 1st of October. He said that the victim was allegedly attacked at her new boyfriend’s house while they were asleep. The suspect is also said to have hit the victim with a knock-berry while the new boyfriend ran away. Mabophiwa said the suspect who had fled the scene was later arrested on the same day.
