The money which was meant for March pension payouts for old age beneficiaries, was received at Tati town Post Office on Wednesday 31 March 2026. Soon after receiving the stash the Postmaster is alleged to have started embezzling the monies, the very same day.
Thirty-seven-year-old Makei who was the mastermind of the heist was ordered to pay a cash bail of P5 000, avail two sureties binding themselves with the same amount each, report to Tati Town Police Station every last Friday of the month and not to interfere with witnesses and investigations.
The same bail conditions were granted to 39-year-old Molibi Mokhalee, Gofaone Diteko (35) and 31-year-old Balini Nfandiso. While the suspects have earned a relief from life behind bars, cops are yet to be granted court orders to have access to the suspects’ banks accounts.
Makhalee, Diteko and Nfandiso face a single charge of theft, while the Post office employee is charged of stealing by servant. If convicted the suspects may spend time in prison not exceeding three and seven years respectively.
Investigations by Tati Town police indicate the robbery was staged, as there were no signs of forced entry or violence of any kind on the post office employee or property.
The suspects return to court for status update on the 25th of June.
