Police are investigating two separate rape incidents that occurred in Maun and Somelo recently with the suspect of the first incident still at large while that of the second one has been arrested and awaits to appear before court.
The first incident, reported in Maun on Friday, allegedly involved a distressing abduction and rape of a 20-year-old woman near a local night club.
Assistant Superintendent Kgakgamatso Koboyatshwene disclosed in an interview that the victim, a resident of Kgosing ward, on the night of Thursday at the hours between 2300hrs and 0045hrs was seeking food in the vicinity of the club, when she encountered a man persistently attempting to seduce her.
Despite the woman’s firm rejection of the man’s advances, the situation escalated tragically as the man is reported to have forcefully abducted her to an alleyway in Sanyedi ward, where the heinous crime of rape was committed.
Assistant Superintendent Koboyatshwene, indicated that the victim reported the alleged assault to the police on Friday morning. In a separate but equally disturbing incident in Somelo village, a 26-year-old woman also reported a case of alleged rape to the police this past Saturday.
According to Assistant Superintendent Koboyatshwene, the reported events reportedly unfolded when the woman returned home after a night out on Friday. Under the cover of darkness, an acquaintance is alleged to have unlawfully entered her home and sexually assaulted her.
The alleged perpetrator aged 26 was swiftly apprehended and remains in police custody pending further investigation into the details of the crime and subsequently his arraignment before court.
These distressing events have sent shockwaves through the two villages, prompting heightened concerns for community safety. Assistant Superintendent Koboyatshwene has however assured the public of the police’s unwavering commitment to bringing the unknown culprit of the first incident to justice and urged anyone with information to come forward.
