Police in Maun have revealed their readiness to deal with the issue of law and order as thousands are expected to flock in for the buzzing entertainment activities billed for the independence holidays.
Many events and festivities lined up for the holidays will attract many people to Maun, with large crowds at these events being a breeding ground for criminal activities where some take advantage.
The major events which are anticipated to be crowd pullers are the Maun Summer Festival and the Maun Carnival.
Maun Summer Festival billed for Maun Sports Complex will be headlined by Makhadzi, a South African singer who has a large following in the music industry. Maun Carnival’s festival on the other hand will be headlined by South Africa’s favorite pop duo, Mafikizolo.
Speaking in an interview with District No.5 Officer Commanding Senior Superintendent Onious Madziba revealed that hotels and lodges in Maun are already fully booked therefore they expect busy holidays.
“This year it will be different as compared to the previous years due to relaxed covid-19 protocols, therefore we are expecting high numbers of visitors into Maun,” he said. He noted that in 2021 there were fewer cases of crime because of the Covid-19 protocols that controlled movement and gatherings.
Madziba indicated that the security organs around Maun are ready and prepared to control any situation that may arise, adding that they have engaged with the Botswana Defence Force (BDF), community policing and different police clusters to ensure tighter security. He emphasized that the operation will start on Wednesday.
Police have since advised the public to protect their properties, while at the same time ensuring their safety at all times.
Madziba has advised businesses to avoid keeping large sums of money in their cars, businesses and homes to avoid robberies and heists.
“We are pleading with the entire community of Maun and surrounding areas to report any crime during these holidays as well as make sure that they cooperate with the security officers whenever there is a problem,” he pleaded.
Inconsiderate and careless drivers will not be off the police radar, as they will also be pursued and charged accordingly. Madziba has warned that drinking and driving will be dealt with harshly to ensure the many motorists that will be in Maun are safe on the roads.
