Police in Gweta are investigating a suspected case of murder in which a 28-year-old woman of Thuma Ward in Gweta was found lying motionless with severe head injuries on the roadside in Moremi Ward in the early hours of Monday.
Gweta Police Station Commander Superintendent Tabengwa Magwama said police received the report at around 0230am after a passerby discovered the woman lying by the roadside.
“Upon receiving the report, officers rushed to the scene and found the woman with severe head injuries. She was taken to Gweta Primary Hospital where she was later certified dead,” Magwama said on recently.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had been at her family home with her parents on Sunday evening.
According to Magwama, the parents went to bed while their daughter remained behind watching television. The parents were later shocked to learn of her death, as they had believed that she had eventually gone to bed after them.
Police have not yet established the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, including how she came to be along the roadside where she was discovered.
Investigations are therefore ongoing to determine what happened between the time she was last seen at home and when she was found with the fatal injuries.
Magwama has appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed anything suspicious in the area during the night or who may have information that could assist police investigations to come forward.
He urged residents not to withhold information that could help police identify and apprehend the person responsible for the woman’s death.
Magwama further assured members of the public that information provided to the police would be treated with confidentiality and that whistleblowers would remain anonymous. He also cautioned members of the public against violence and urged residents to report suspicious activities or incidents to the police rather than taking matters into their own hands.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of her next of kin. Police continue to appeal for information as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death continue.
