- – Initiative also seeks to build stronger ties with local faith-based communities
As part of efforts to promote the spiritual wellbeing of its members, the Botswana Police Service (BPS) recently joined churches across the country for worship, prayer, and fellowship.
In Maun, police officers began their spiritual upliftment programme at the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) Maun Congregation, where they shared experiences about their work, challenges they encounter, and their role in serving and protecting communities. The church visits provide officers with an opportunity to step away from the demands of policing, reflect on their experiences, and seek spiritual renewal as they continue carrying out their duties.
The programme also seeks to strengthen relations between the police and faith-based communities, while promoting unity, moral values, and collective responsibility in building safer and more peaceful communities.
Speaking during the church service, Officer Commanding Maun Police District (No. 5 District), Senior Superintendent Patrick Molefhe, said the primary responsibility of the police was to serve and protect members of the community. He, however, noted that policing was a demanding profession, with officers regularly exposed to traumatic situations, some of which put their lives at risk.
Molefhe said officers are human beings before they are police officers and, therefore, need opportunities to heal, reflect, and regain their strength through spiritual support.
“Sometimes we go through difficult situations in the line of duty. We witness traumatic incidents and face situations where our lives are in danger,” he said. He added that such experiences could take a toll on officers, making spiritual upliftment and encouragement important in helping them remain focused on their responsibilities. Molefhe said the BPS intended to continue visiting different churches as part of efforts to seek prayers, encouragement, and spiritual support for officers.
For his part, Reverend Orapeleng Culture Matibisi of the UCCSA Maun Congregation described the police as blessed for carrying out the important responsibility of protecting and serving the nation. He encouraged officers to remain grounded in their faith and to seek God’s guidance and strength as they carried out their duties.
Matibisi said the responsibility entrusted to police officers was significant because their work directly contributed to the safety and wellbeing of communities. He urged the officers not to lose faith when faced with difficult situations, but to continue praying for wisdom, courage, and strength to overcome the challenges associated with their work. The reverend further reminded the officers that their service was not only a professional responsibility but also an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of the people they serve.
