Packed Sporting Calendar This Holiday

A plethora of sporting activities is lined up for this President’s holidays long weekend in the North West District.

The events include the Women Awareness Football Tournament, organised by Wolfsburg Sporting Club set to take place in Sehithwa at the village’s Show Grounds on the tomorrow (15th July 2023).

In Maun, Delta Spirit will host a 3×3, a side Basketball tournament at Tshwaragano JSS from the 15th-16th July 2023 while on the same dates Botswana Netball Association (BONA) in partnership with SKL Group of Camps will be hosting BONA FAST 5 Netball Tournament at the Village Church in Maun.

The Women Awareness Football Tournament which will be held for the second time is expected to attract four women’s teams being the Maun Heroes, Cubs Sporting Club, Gantsi Sporting Club and Wolfsburg Sporting Club. The tournament will be held under the theme: Women, Information, Support and Advocacy.

The objective of the tournament is to curb socio issues against women, to empower them with health, guidance and to find solution to those affected. It is also meant to bring equal opportunities to women in terms of sports and sensitise them on issues of GBV and other related pressing matters they face daily. The tournament is sponsored by Inspect a Car, Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU), Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) and Botswana Teachers Union (BTU).

Meanwhile, over 10 women and men’s basketball teams are expected to take part in the Delta Spirit 3×3 a side Basketball tournament. The tournament is an official type of set up where teams that are not officially registered with the Botswana Basketball Association (BBA) bring together players to build up their own teams.

The objective of the tournament is to keep basketball alive in the North West District, to raise funds for Delta Spirit basketball club for their participation at the upcoming season of the Botswana Basketball League.  Winners of the men’s category will get P2000 prize money while that of ladies will walk away with P1500.

That as it may, The SKL  BONA Fast 5 Netball Tournament is expected to attract a total of 16 teams being Maun Heroes, BDF Cats, Vipers, Jaspers, Boteti River Giants, Notwane, Morupule, Thunderbolts, Prisons, Police, Nico United, Uprising Stars, UB Crystals, Tasc, Jwaneng and Tafic.

The tournament is meant to select a team that will represent Botswana at the Tribago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games FAST5 netball competition set from the 14th to 18th August 2023 in Trinidad & Tobago.

The tournament which is sponsored by SKL Group of camps at a tune of P238 000 for a three year period will be held under the theme “Importance of Sport Tourism in the Development of Netball.”
