P200 Million To Revive Arts And Creatives

Date:

President Duma Gideon Boko has pledged a new era of opportunity for Botswana’s artists, filmmakers and performers, unveiling sweeping reforms and a 200 million investment in the creative sector during his 2025 State of the Nation Address delivered on Monday.

In a passionate call to elevate the arts, President Boko declared that “sport and the creative industries extend far beyond individual well-being and leisure they have immense potential to contribute to the economy.” He said the government recognises the arts as a vital component of Botswana’s economic transformation agenda, with a direct link to youth empowerment, job creation and innovation.

At the heart of the President’s announcement is a P200 million allocation from the Alcohol Levy Fund to procure locally produced creative content. The initiative will prioritise young artists, musicians, filmmakers, and digital creators, offering financial support to stimulate production and strengthen Botswana’s cultural economy.

“Government has taken a decision to avail P200 million from the Alcohol Levy Fund towards procurement of Creative Arts content from our young people,” Boko confirmed.

He noted that the funding forms part of the government’s broader vision to integrate the creative sector into national development, creating meaningful employment and diversifying income streams beyond traditional industries.

Another major development is the tabling of the Cinematography Bill before Parliament during the current session. The bill seeks to modernise Botswana’s film and television landscape by setting “clear standards for production, distribution and exhibition.” Once enacted, it will create a regulatory framework that protects creators, encourages private investment, and positions Botswana as a competitive destination for film and media production.

The President also underscored the importance of arts education and talent development, linking the reintroduction of sporting and creative activities in schools to nurturing future generations of performers and artists. “The reintroduction of sporting activities in our schools is a valuable investment in the future, as it will enable us to nurture elite athletes, performers, actors, and diverse creative talents,” he said.

Under the Presidential Youth Empowerment Campaign (PYEC), government will also introduce initiatives such as a Digital Content Creation Hub and a Textile Acceleration Programme, designed to provide mentorship and skills training for young creatives and entrepreneurs in the arts and digital industries.

President Boko concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the creative community, stating that youth talent and innovation lie at the heart of Botswana’s renewal. “We see your energy, we value your ideas, we admire your courage,” he said. “We will not dismiss your ideas but develop them; we will not ignore your aspirations but invest in them.”
