Orlando Pirates Legends emerged as champions of the fourth edition of the Betway Clash of Legends after defeating Mochudi Centre Chiefs Legends 3-0 in the tournament final at the National Stadium in Gaborone on Saturday. Despite cold and cloudy conditions, football fans turned out in large numbers to celebrate some of the region’s most iconic former players, creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the day-long event.
The Buccaneers capped off an impressive campaign with a commanding performance in the final. Former Pirates winger Thabo Qalinge opened the scoring before the break, giving the South African giants a 1-0 halftime advantage. Orlando Pirates Legends maintained control in the second half and added two more goals to secure a comfortable victory and lift the coveted trophy.
The triumph completed a successful outing for the Buccaneers, who had earlier edged fellow South African rivals Kaizer Chiefs Legends 1-0 in a tightly contested Soweto Derby semifinal. A solitary goal proved decisive as Pirates claimed local bragging rights and booked their place in the championship match.
Hosts Mochudi Centre Chiefs Legends had earned their place in the final after overcoming Township Rollers Legends 4-2 in an entertaining semifinal encounter. The Magosi legends raced into a 3-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal from Tendani Nyumasi and an eventual brace from Piro Moloi, while Jabu Pilane also found the net in the second half. Rollers responded through Edwin Moalosi and Lemponye Tshireletso, but the comeback fell short.
In the third-place playoff, Township Rollers Legends bounced back from their semifinal disappointment to defeat Kaizer Chiefs Legends 4-2. Rollers led 2-1 at halftime courtesy of goals from Edwin Moalosi and Terrence Mandaza, while Thuso Phala scored for Chiefs. The Botswana giants maintained their attacking momentum after the break to secure a deserved third-place finish.
Following the tournament, Betway Clash of Legends Project Coordinator Sekhana Lawrence Koko expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the event.
“We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the 4th Edition of the Betway Clash of Legends,” said Koko. “A special thank you goes to our supporters who braved the cold weather and rain to attend the event. Your unwavering support transformed the National Stadium into a vibrant celebration of football.”
Koko also acknowledged the attendance of Botswana President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko and First Lady Kaone Boko, noting that their presence highlighted the significance of the event and its support for charitable causes.
The tournament featured legends from Township Rollers, Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates, bringing together some of Southern Africa’s most celebrated football figures in a showcase of nostalgia, community spirit, and sporting excellence. With another successful edition completed, organisers have already set their sights on an even bigger Betway Clash of Legends in 2027.
