- donates two more laptops to Maun’s Lead Girl Digital Centre
Orange Botswana Foundation has donated two more laptops to the Lead Girl Digital Centre in Maun adding to the 20 tablets, 10 laptops, a printer, projector and a server it has previously given to the centre in 2022.
The centre based in Sedie is dedicated to ensuring that women are not left behind in the digital and technological space and that they are awarded equal opportunities to use or own digital technologies. It further promotes access and use of digital technologies by women and girls from rural and hard to reach places.
The centre is designed to deliver literacy, micro-entrepreneurial skills and training modules to women in disadvantaged situations. It further aims to teach women basic business management and promote digital inclusion by providing them with technical equipment such as computers, laptops, projectors, tablets, printers and USBs, teaching them to use these digital tools as well as basic software familiarity.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Executive Coordinator for Queen Esther Organisattion, Vehae Tjiriange said the Lead Girl Digital Centre has become a beacon of transformation for Maun and its surrounding villages.
“Many girls in rural areas continue to face barriers such as limited access to technology and leadership platforms. Initiatives like the Lead Girl Digital Centre and partnerships like the one we celebrate today with Orange are vital to closing these gaps and ensuring that no girl is left behind,” she said.
Tjiriange stated that Orange Foundation’s generous donation of two laptops will further strengthen the efforts at the Lead Girl Digital Centre, equipping more girls with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
For his part, the regional manager for Orange Botswana, Moses Tshwanelo noted that their aim is to empower women and girls with digital skills. He added that they have added more laptops as they have noticed a growth in the community adding that they would like to see a future of independent women who are able to use digital platforms to access services, citing the payment of bills, online business transactions and even studying on line.
Since its inception, the center has provided a safe space where girls can learn, grow, and access opportunities once beyond their reach. From fostering digital literacy to nurturing leadership skills, the center has made a profound impact, proving that empowering a girl means empowering an entire community.
