- Maun police launch investigations to nab mother
In a deeply troubling incident that has left the Maun community in shock, a newborn baby boy was discovered abandoned near Disaneng Ward’s Exit 5 this past weekend.
Maun Police have since launched an investigation into the matter, appealing to members of the public to assist with any information that could help identify the child’s mother or relatives.
According to Superintendent Joseph Lepodise, the Station Commander at Maun Police Station, the infant believed to be only a few days old was found by a 25-year-old man from the village of Shorobe. The man, who had been walking along the roadside with another pedestrian, noticed something unusual lying under a tree just off the path. Upon closer inspection, they were both shocked to find a tiny baby boy, swaddled in a single, thin blanket.
Upon receiving the report, the police swiftly rushed to the scene and the baby was immediately taken Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital. The infant has since been confirmed to be in a stable condition and receiving the necessary medical attention.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the child may have been abandoned sometime during the night of Friday or in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Lepodise revealed that this is not the first similar incident to occur in Maun this year. as early January, another case was reported in Wenela Ward, where a baby girl was found abandoned under comparable circumstances.
As investigations continue, the baby boy found at Disaneng Exit 5 will remain under medical and protective care, with welfare officers closely monitoring his condition.
Meanwhile, the Station Commander has reported a suicide incident involving a 40-year-old man from Madikwe Ward in Tutume village.
The incident was reported by a 42-year-old man of Sanyedi ward who indicated that he found his tenants hanging on the rafters of his house. Lepodise revealed that the reporter last saw the deceased on Friday and after several days without any contact, he grew suspicious and decided to check on him at his house.
“The deceased did not leave any suicide note or show any signs of distress or anger,” he said.
