The new primary school being constructed in Kazungula is expected to greatly reduce congestion at the Kazungula primary school once complete. The school project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The project is a donation from China at a cost equivalent of P 8 077 190, and consists of one office block, one canteen/ kitchen dining hall, one equipment room, three classroom blocks (14 classrooms), one toilet block, five blocks of teachers’ dormitories (15 Housing Units), two guard rooms, one football pitch, one basketball court and covered walk ways.
Currently there is one existing primary school in Kazungula, named Kazungula Primary School, the new primary will be the second and consultations for the name of the school are in ongoing.
In an interview, Chobe District Council Secretary Esau Mbanga said that the project will improve education performance of students and reduce congestion in other nearby primary schools. He noted that the school will also offer high standards of education and instil discipline and morality in the community.
He said that upon completion of the project the long distance that the students in the area took to walk to other schools will be reduced.
‘There is a need for an extra school in our district, the number of students currently enrolled in Kasane /Kazungula primary schools including Lesoma stands at around 2928 and after the new school is opened all the schools will be accommodating 2670 with the remaining short fall of 258 having to be absorbed,” he said.
He said that the numbers indicate that after opening of the new school there will be a shortfall of nine class rooms based on a ratio of one classroom to 30 students.
According to him, the project has improved skills transfer to locals during construction, stimulated businesses in the construction supply chain, stimulate vendor businesses and elevated property values of surrounding plots.
