National Development Bank To Integrate Commercial Services

Date:

Over the next five years, Botswana’s development financial institution, the National Development Bank (NDB), will transition into a hybrid model, combining development finance with commercial banking capabilities.

NDB Chief Executive Officer Ogone Madisa disclosed this during an “Isago” breakfast session held for clients, partners, and stakeholders in Francistown this week.

“A key part of this journey is our transition to a hybrid model. This means greater flexibility, broader solutions, and improved access to funding for our clients,” said Madisa.

Madisa revealed that in the coming months, the bank will undertake a feasibility study to determine which specific model best suits the local environment and the evolving needs of NDB customers.

“Our priorities for the year ahead are clear: delivering real, tangible value. This includes strengthening credit processes and expanding sustainable financing options tailored to your sectors and ambitions. We are also collaborating with regional and international partners to unlock more funding,” the CEO highlighted.

The bank’s strategy, dubbed “Motlhala wa Pula, Modi wa Isago,” runs until 2030. It is centered on enabling homegrown businesses and entrepreneurs to grow, unlocking new opportunities, and driving economic progress.

“We are focusing on investing in sectors that matter: services, tourism, mining services, health, education, logistics, property, manufacturing, agriculture, infrastructure, and green finance,” Madisa continued.

Furthermore, NDB will embark on digitalising its systems and implementing automation to reduce turnaround times and simplify processes. Madisa indicated that the bank has no intention of increasing its physical branch network beyond its current four locations, opting instead to invest in technology.

“The way to go is to become the best bank in terms of using technology. We will maintain the four branches to reduce costs. If need be, we would rather utilize agency banking,” she said.

Madisa assured current and prospective customers that the institution has turned the tide, gaining financial stability after years of navigating a challenging economic environment. She noted that the bank used that period to strengthen processes, recruit right-fit talent, and build a resilient foundation.

“We have restored financial stability and improved how we assess and manage risk. For the past two years, we have posted profits, and our growth has reached double digits,” Madisa concluded.
