MMG Khoemacau, Gov’t Finalise Deal On Centre Of Mining Excellence

Date:

  • – Implementation will begin immediately

MMG Khoemacau and the Ministry of Higher Education have officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to establish a Centre of Mining Excellence at Maun Technical College. This partnership marks a significant milestone in developing Botswana’s future mining workforce. The signing ceremony, held under the theme “From Skills to Opportunity,” directly follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties regarding the Centre in July this year.

This collective initiative reflects a shared commitment to building a highly skilled, future-ready workforce to support Botswana’s evolving mining sector and broader economic transformation agenda. By creating a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals, the Centre aims to address critical workforce challenges. These include preparing work-ready graduates, reducing critical skills shortages in underground mining, and increasing the overall availability of locally trained operators and technical specialists in Botswana.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Higher Education Prince Maele explained that collaborations between government, industry, and education are crucial for academic and economic transformation. He noted that no single government can transform a nation alone, no industry can build a workforce alone, and no educational institution can prepare tomorrow’s professionals without engaging employers. Maele emphasized that the MoA represents a new way of thinking about skills development and the relationship between education and industry. To the Ministry, the initiative offers an opportunity to produce adaptable, globally competitive graduates who are problem-solvers and innovators rather than mere job seekers.

Furthermore, Maele stated that the agreement intends to deliver better learning environments, exposure to science and technology, mentorship scholarships, and career pathways. He highlighted that the government has deliberately positioned Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a first-choice pathway to innovation, industrial growth, and national competitiveness.

Chen Dextin, Chairman of China Minmetals Corporation, spoke on behalf of CMC and described the partnership as “a bridge of friendship between China and Botswana.” Chen affirmed a long-term commitment to the country, stating that the Centre will train large numbers of local workers equipped with world-class technologies to support social and economic progress.

Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Kenewendo added that the MoA reflects the government’s expectation for mining companies to act as joint custodians of national resources. She noted that while diamonds have historically driven the economy, diversifying into other minerals requires new capabilities, making the Maun facility a cornerstone for future skills development.

The finalized MoA outlines commitments for new curriculum development, practical training, mentorship, and scholarships. The Ministry confirmed that implementation will begin immediately with clear timelines and accountability measures to ensure local impact.
