- Police visibility among the measures to ensure public safety over holidays
Maun Police Station Commander Superintendent Joseph Lepodise has outlined a comprehensive plan to ensure public safety during the upcoming festive season, emphasising a focus on combating illegal activities and enhancing law enforcement visibility in the community.
Lepodise revealed that task teams have already been deployed to patrol key areas on foot, particularly in towns and high-traffic zones. These measures aim to curb a concerning rise in money-related scams, especially at ATMs, which have become hotspots for criminal activity.
Lepodise explained that scammers are targeting individuals withdrawing money through cellphone banking amongst some of the other scams. He detailed one common scheme involving two perpetrators: one monitors a victim from behind to obtain their withdrawal or ewallet code, while the other waits ahead in the queue.
Once the code is stolen, the scammer behind tries to request the phone of the withdrawer and if allowed to use the phone the scammer sends the scammer ahead the code. Once complete the scam would have both the person’s number and pin which leads to the scammer ahead of the victim completing the withdrawal, leaving the rightful owner with no funds.
“It is unfortunate that this period sees an increase in such scams,” said Lepodise. “We urge the public to exercise caution when withdrawing money at ATMs. Shield your transactions, prepare your codes in advance, and remain vigilant to prevent falling victim to these schemes.”
As part of the broader festive campaign, the police will ramp up patrols and roadblocks beginning this Friday. These measures aim to reduce road accidents and deter reckless driving. Stop-and-search operations will also be conducted to address potential safety threats.
Lepodise urged motorists to avoid driving under the influence and encouraged the use of taxis for safe transport after celebrations. “Be responsible. If you plan to drink, leave your car at home and arrange for a safe ride. Drivers should also remain alert and cautious, as others may not be following the rules,” he added.
For those planning to travel during the holidays, the station commander advised safeguarding homes and belongings. Strategies include leaving someone in the residence, taking valuables along, or coordinating with neighborhood watch groups to deter burglaries.
To enhance safety across the community, police officers will conduct foot patrols in various areas, including bars and residential neighborhoods. These efforts are aimed at preventing crimes and ensuring public order during the festive season.
“Our goal is to reduce crime and maintain safety throughout the community,” said Lepodise. “We urge the public to refrain from criminal activities and remain vigilant during the holidays.”
As preparations intensify, the Maun Police remains committed to ensuring a safe and secure festive period for all.
