Maun Man Pleads Not Guilty To 2021 Rape Charge

Date:

A 37-year-old Maun resident has pleaded not guilty to a single count of rape during a recent appearance before the Maun Magistrate’s Court.

The accused, Noah Moengele, appeared before Magistrate Gofaone Mosweu for a mention of the case. During the proceedings, the court focused on essential procedural steps, including the formal serving of witness statements to the accused. Magistrate Mosweu underscored the gravity of these documents, directing Moengele to study them meticulously as they will form the backbone of the evidence presented as the matter progresses toward a full trial.

The court has since postponed the matter to June 8 for a case management conference. At this stage, both the prosecution and the defense will be required to outline their readiness for trial, exchange any outstanding evidence, and resolve preliminary legal issues to ensure the hearing proceeds without further delay.

According to official court records, the charge originates from an incident alleged to have taken place on June 17, 2021, in Boseja ward, Maun. The state’s case is that Moengele lured the complainant into his vehicle by offering her money to buy sweets.

It is further alleged that the accused then drove the complainant to a secluded location, where he engaged in sexual intercourse with her without her consent. Following the report, police launched an investigation which led to Moengele being warned, cautioned, and eventually formally charged with the offense.

While the Case Management Conference is expected to determine the definitive trial timeline, the matter has already sparked discussion regarding the length of time between the alleged offense and the current court action. Nearly three years have passed since the incident in Boseja, though no specific explanations for the delay were placed on the record during the latest session.

In keeping with ethical journalism standards and the legal protections afforded to victims of sexual offenses, the identity of the complainant has been withheld. Such protections are vital to maintaining the dignity and safety of survivors during the judicial process. Moengele remains out on bail under the conditions previously set by the court. He is expected to appear in person on the scheduled June date, where the court will provide further directions on the commencement of the trial
