For the first time ever, Maun will host an exclusive art excursion, the Maun Art Jam which is expected to bring together over 100 art enthusiasts at Luxury Wild Inn on September 28. The event promises a unique experience where participants, both seasoned and amateur, will paint on canvas in an intimate and inspiring environment.
Curated by Gofiwa Basima, a travel and hospitality expert, the Maun Art Jam aims to blend artistic expression with a sense of community. “I draw inspiration from my travels,” Basima shared. “Art is a powerful form of communication and expression. It allows us to have opinions about things that words can’t always capture. Through this event, we want to encourage Batswana to connect with art and learn from professionals.”
Set to take place just before Botswana’s Independence Day celebrations, the event will kick off in the morning, with both children and adults invited to participate in a guided demonstration led by a professional artist, whose identity will be revealed closer to the event. Throughout the day, participants will enjoy soothing music designed to stimulate creativity. Additionally, as an engaging icebreaker, attendees will get to play Metsweding, a local board game that teaches about Botswana’s rich history and culture.
“We want people to let loose and paint,” Basima said. “Adults will have the option to enjoy wine while they work, embracing the therapeutic benefits of art. I am excited to be part of this and hope attendees will let their imaginations run wild as they bring their canvases to life.”
Despite Maun’s fame as a tourism hub, Basima acknowledges that the region’s art culture often flies under the radar. The Maun Art Jam seeks to change that by providing a platform for artists to showcase their talent and for art lovers to immerse themselves in the creative process.
Basima believes that professional artists in Botswana could achieve more if given greater appreciation. “Many artists make their income from commissions, but there is so much untapped potential,” she explained. “Through this event, I hope to spark collaboration between professional and amateur artists, allowing them to learn from each other and create an environment that encourages appreciation and support for local art.”
“Everyone is welcome,” Basima concluded. “Bring your friends, family, or even your professional teams. The date is set—let’s make this a celebration of creativity and expression.”
The Maun Art Jam promises to be a vibrant event, paving the way for a greater appreciation of art in the region.
