Date:

  • fulfills a 15-year dream

In a feat of endurance, determination and self-reliance Botswana’s Marc Germiquet crossed the finish line of the World’s Toughest Row, realising a 15-year dream and carving his name into the annals of adventure sport. From battling seven-meter waves to navigating encounters with nature’s wonders, Germiquet’s journey from Morocco to the Caribbean showcased the pinnacle of human endurance. The race was a grueling 3000 mile row that started on the 11th of December 2024 and concluded on the 23rd of January 2025.

Arriving at the finish line was a moment filled with mixed emotions for Germiquet. “It was amazing,” he reflected. “The atmosphere was insane—people on the hills, on boats, cheering. But it was also bittersweet knowing my journey across the ocean was over.” Fighting headwinds and currents to cross the final stretch, Germiquet’s excitement was tempered by a sense of accomplishment that only comes from realizing a lifelong ambition.

The crossing was far from smooth sailing. One of Germiquet’s most harrowing moments occurred when his boat’s rudder malfunctioned just a week from the finish. Waves towering at seven meters and strong winds left him unable to steer. Drawing on prior training, he performed an emergency repair while being tossed around in the relentless ocean. “It was extremely challenging,” he admitted. “With no one to help, everything was on me. But I managed to fix the rudder and get back to racing, losing just four nautical miles.”

Amidst the struggles, Germiquet experienced moments of pure magic. One                         highlight was an encounter with a   minke whale that surfed the waves alongside him for 45 minutes. “It was unforgettable,” he said. “Seeing this massive creature having fun while I was surfing the waves, it was a connection with nature I’ll cherish forever.”

Beyond personal milestones, Germiquet hopes his journey will inspire others and shine a spotlight on Botswana. He also aims to use the platform to raise funds for the Bushways Foundation, a cause close to his heart. “Education is everything,” he emphasized. “If we can raise enough to build another pre-primary school, it would mean the world.”

Germiquet’s incredible solo performance has sparked immense generosity from supporters worldwide.

Lesego Keeng, Marketing Assistant and Reservationist in Bushways Safaris revealed, “I am thrilled to share that through pledges and donations to the Bushways Foundation, we have raised an impressive P140,000 so far,”

In a remarkable gesture of solidarity, Bushways Safaris has pledged to match the total amount raised by the public, effectively doubling the funds.

“This means we’re set to contribute a total of more than P280,000 to this initiative and we’re still accepting donations and pledges,” Keeng added.

The funds will go toward constructing a pre-primary school to provide much-needed access to early childhood education for remote communities in North West Botswana.

“This is about more than rowing; it’s about creating a lasting impact on children’s lives,” Germiquet added. “The journey is far from over, and there’s still time to join us in making a difference.”

After two years of preparation and months at sea, Germiquet is taking time to refocus on his business and foundation. However, the adventurer in him is already eyeing future challenges. “There are some big mountain biking events I’d like to tackle, but honestly, topping this experience will be hard,” he admitted. “Rowing across an entire ocean is the ultimate test of endurance and mental strength.”
