A Zimbabwean national, 26-year-old Ronnie Moyo was this week dragged before the Francistown Magistrate’s Court, accused of defiling and impregnating a Form 2 student who resides in Borolong.
Moyo from Plumtree who entered and has been residing Botswana illegally and was not asked to take plea is currently in remand until next week Friday.
Meanwhile, the mother of the 14-year-old girl appeared before Principal Magistrate Tshepo Magetse, and was cagey to disclose if they were aware their daughter was in a romantic relationship with Moyo. Quizzed by Magistrate Magetse if she knew their daughter was dating and engaging in sex with Moyo. The woman told the Court she was not aware of the love relationship, but however knew Moyo.
“I did not know my daughter was dating Moyo and that they were having sex. But Moyo is someone I knew and also known to my family. He stayed in Borolong and we were familiar with him. I did not know even how old he is,” answered the mother of the defiled girl.
The mother said she only got to know the girl was pregnant when she saw her vomiting and realized that she was losing weight. According to her, the minor was not eating much and complaining about stomach pains. A test at the clinic confirmed that she was pregnant.
“After much questioning as to who has gotten her pregnant, she told me it’s Ronnie.”
Offered an option to have the pregnancy terminated, the mother of the girl who is now four months pregnant said they have found it best not to do that.
“We have talked with my daughter and the accused person before he was arrested and agreed to keep the pregnancy. Moyo promised to look after the baby and provide all necessities. It seems he is also still interested in my daughter. My child will continue with her schooling once she has given birth,” continued the mother much to the surprise of court.
