The Botswana Premier League (BPL) and First Division Leagues (FDL) finally resumes tomorrow (Saturday, 27th, 2024) after weeks of suspension by the Botswana Football League (BFL).
This was revealed by the Botswana Football Association (BFA) President Maclean Letshwiti on Monday during a media briefing. Letshwiti indicated that the leagues will resume tomorrow after BFA withdrew the suspension imposed to BFL on the 17th January 2024.
According to Letshwiti, BFL membership was suspended from BFA as per the article 13.1 of the BFA constitution. Letshwiti explained that the suspension was due to BFL’s failure to adhere to directives to comply with their constitutional and contractual obligations, continue with BPL and National First Division leagues and cease with their threats of suspending the leagues.
“We have come to terms with BFL in our last meeting on Sunday 21st, 2024 that the league matches will resume therefore there is no need for the suspension on the BFL or BPL. We have now agreed that the board of BFL shall continue to prepare for the league matches,” he said.
The BFL interim chairperson Tebogo Sebego concurred that the BFL stakeholders have agreed at their Palapye meeting to allow the league matches to resume tomorrow, adding that the issues of team grants were also discussed and will be released soon.
“We are pleased that BFA has given in to all the demands that we made at our Palapye meeting,” he said.
The BFA meeting has resolved that the grants will be released soon and will be double the initial P100 000 to P200 000. Furthermore, only three teams will relegate at the end of the season instead of 4 teams previously proposed by former BFL chairperson Nicolas Zakhem.
Tomorrow marks week 15 of the BFL and eight fixtures are lined up for the weekend, Morupule Wanderers FC takes on Sua Flamingoes at Palapye stadium while Police lock horns with Masitaoka at Dinaledi Football Academy stadium.
At the Sam Sono stadium, Township Rollers will fight for three points with Nico United. Matebele FC travels to Francistown to take on Tafic at Obed Itani Chilume stadium. All matches start at 1600hrs.
On Sunday, Lobatse stadium will host Gaborone United against BDF XI while Orapa United are visitors to Holy Ghost at the National Stadium. Galaxy welcomes VTM FC at Galaxy stadium at 1600hrs.
