Khoemacau, Partners Deliver Crucial Medical Supplies

Date:

In a decisive move to strengthen rural healthcare, MMG Khoemacau Copper Mining and its business partner, Royal Gold, have delivered a major consignment of medical supplies to the North West District Council (NWDC). The official handover took place recently at Toteng Clinic, a venue holding a symbolic value for the local community.

Years prior, when construction of the vital facility stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both corporate entities stepped in to inject over P3 million Pula to complete, refurbish, and furnish the structure.

As detailed at the time by Khoemacau’s acting general manager, Neo Kwakwa, that initial multi-million Pula project covered a complete structural overhaul, the finalisation of cooling networks, the installation of water storage systems, and the complete provision of clinical furniture. Crucially, the companies went beyond basic construction by delivering essential medical apparatus, ensuring the facility was fully operational upon handover so that the community did not have to wait for the government to source equipment.

The initial phase also funded the refurbishment of the old Toteng Health post, creating an efficacious health hub for a local population of 1,854 people who rely on a single doctor and three nurses for outpatient, pharmacy, and reproductive health services. This continuous, multi-year intervention cements the mining companies’ core corporate philosophy of driving sustainable development and ensuring tangible support reaches the host communities where its Zone 5 mine operates.

While that foundational infrastructure was established during the previous handover, the recent consignment ensures the clinic’s shelves and regional networks are fully provisioned to meet pressing patient needs. The newly arrived medical supplies are structured to address healthcare demands at every level of the district, translating corporate resource allocation directly into local human development.

In an interview following the ceremony, MMG Khoemacau Community & Stakeholder Manager Ontitile Zimona shared the operational details of the latest consignment, explaining that the inventory will be split into two streams to maximise local impact. The NWDC will distribute varying essential medical supplies among smaller local health clinics and village health posts to reinforce frontline rural care.

Meanwhile, specialised medical equipment from the donation is headed straight to Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital in Maun. Zimona emphasised that this dual approach ensures rural health posts are immediately reinforced while simultaneously upgrading advanced patient care at the regional hub.

This critical corporate intervention comes at a critical  juncture for the region’s public health system, which has been under immense pressure. North West District Council Chairman Itumeleng Kelebetseng appreciated the gesture and highlighted that the timing could not have been better. Kelebetseng noted that the district, like the rest of Botswana, is currently battling a severe shortage of medicines and clinical supplies. He praised the mining partners for stepping up during a crisis, stating that the donation will go a long way in immediately enhancing patient care and saving lives across the district.

For MMG Khoemacau and Royal Gold, the transition from building the clinic’s walls to stocking its inventory is a long-term commitment to ensure that mining wealth leaves a lasting legacy. Royal Gold Vice President of Operations Martin Raffield previously highlighted that his company understands the immense importance of building deep relationships with local authorities, stakeholders, and communities in their areas of operation. By addressing both long-term infrastructural deficits and immediate supply-chain realities, the corporate partners continue to drive sustainable development across the North West District. This robust public-private partnership showcases how corporate entities can directly fortify public infrastructure, proving that the health and well-being of the community is intrinsically linked to the operational success of the mine.
