Junior Stars Shine At Southern Africa Junior Championships

Date:

The individual competition at the 2025 Southern Africa Junior Championships concluded this week, with Botswana’s junior tennis players delivering a series of determined and commendable performances across singles and doubles categories.

In the U14 girls’ doubles, Angel Chakanyuka and Malak Macheng emerged as standout performers, claiming a well-earned silver medal after an impressive run through the tournament. The duo showcased strong chemistry and composure under pressure, underlining their growing status as one of the region’s most promising young pairings. On the boys’ side, Tinashe Phatshwane and Lebone Tlape also made headlines after reaching the U14 doubles semi-finals, where they faced stiff competition from South African opponents in closely contested matches.

Individually, Phatshwane continued to be one of Botswana’s brightest prospects. He finished fourth in the boys’ singles U14 category, narrowly missing out on a podium spot. His campaign included a dominant semi-final qualification, highlighted by a flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory over Zambia’s Mapalo Mulenga. Reene Sebego also impressed in the girls’ singles U14, finishing fourth overall. Her run included a notable upset against teammate Malak Macheng in a gripping three-set encounter, winning 4-6, 7-5 (10-7) to advance to the semi-finals.

Other strong finishes saw Lebone Tlape place sixth in the boys’ U14, Kgotso Kejakang finish eighth in the boys’ U16, Angel Chakanyuka secure sixth in the girls’ U14, and Malak Macheng end seventh in the same category. Collectively, these results reflected the depth and competitiveness of Botswana’s junior squad.

The opening rounds of the championships also set the tone for the team’s overall performance. Phatshwane survived an early test against Mauritius’ Alexandre Thevenet, edging a tight match 6-3, 2-6 (13-11), while Chakanyuka recorded a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Lucie Samy of Mauritius. Sebego was equally commanding early on, registering consecutive straight-set victories to reach the quarterfinals.

Although several players bowed out in the early rounds against tough regional opposition, the overall campaign was marked by resilience, discipline, and clear progress. With multiple semi-final appearances, a silver medal, and several top-eight finishes, Botswana’s junior athletes demonstrated the rewards of hard work and dedication, offering plenty of optimism for the future of the sport.

Ultimately, the development of Tennis as a whole in the nation, points towards a positive trajectory with the younger demographic showing trails of potential to be great in the near future. Trail blazers such as Ntungamili Raguin started under the banner and show glimpses of what the future and current could be.
