HATAB In Maun

Date:

The 2025 Hospitality and Tourism Association of Botswana (HATAB) annual conference which ends today, April 25 in Maun comes at a crucial time when the global tourism landscape is evolving rapidly.

This year’s theme, “BOTSWANA TOURISM: EXPLORING THE CONDITIONS FOR GROWTH,” provides a strategic platform to examine the key drivers of sustainable development and innovation in the sector. With the confirmed attendance of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Botswana Duma Boko and the Honourable Minister of Environment and Tourism Wynter Mmolotsi, the conference is expected to set the tone for national commitment and policy direction in tourism growth.

A key expectation from this conference is the articulation of a clear, forward-looking national tourism strategy. With the sub-theme on tourism strategy and digital transformation, stakeholders anticipate the unveiling or reinforcement of frameworks that embrace digital tools for marketing, booking, and visitor engagement. The integration of smart technologies can help position Botswana as a competitive, tech-savvy destination, appealing especially to younger, experience-driven travellers.

The sub-theme on aviation and economic sustainability indicates that accessibility remains one of the bottlenecks to tourism growth in Botswana. In this regard, discussions are expected to emphasize expanding regional air connectivity, reducing travel costs, and incentivizing local investment in the aviation sector. We look to the government to announce or commit to ensuring that Air Botswana becomes reliable and grow big to strengthen the tourism value chain and make Botswana more accessible to both regional and international travellers.

The sub-theme on environmental conservation and cultural heritage reflects Botswana’s longstanding reputation as a sustainable tourism destination. Delegates will expect commitments from policymakers and stakeholders to uphold the country’s strategy on tourism development model while innovating into sustainable tourism, heritage site preservation, and responsible wildlife tourism. Concrete plans to support local communities who are custodians of these resources are also anticipated.

In relation to the sub-theme on MICE tourism and destination marketing, our expectation is that we should see MICE being developed as a promising area for economic diversification. We anticipate discussions on how to make Botswana a hub for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions by upgrading infrastructure, leveraging digital marketing, and offering competitive event-hosting packages. Clear plans to enhance the country’s visibility in regional and global markets will be welcomed. MICE has the potential to create thousands of job opportunities and revive Botswana’s ailing economy.

Lastly, skills development and community engagement are vital. Expectations are high for the launch or scaling-up of training programs that equip youth and rural communities with practical tourism skills—from hospitality management to digital marketing. Inclusion and empowerment should be central to tourism development, ensuring that growth translates to broad-based economic benefits.

From His Excellency the President, we hope for a strong policy commitment that prioritises tourism as a pillar of economic transformation. His presence will signify national will and rally collective action. From the Honourable Minister, clear action plans and timelines on implementation will be crucial. Overall, this conference should serve not just as a forum for dialogue, but as a launchpad for impactful decisions, investments, and partnerships that shape the future of Botswana’s tourism.
