Another year has flown past yet again and it’s that time to reflect and look back on the year behind us. It is also time for a lot of people to unwind, put their feet up and take a well-deserved break. A lot of people will be travelling, mostly to their home villages while some will be going on vacation. As per norm, I shall give a few tips on how to stay healthy during this time.
Most private hospitals and pharmacies will be closed during the holidays. It is thus important to ensure that those on chronic medications have enough to last them throughout this period. If not, then now would be a good time to restock. When travelling do not forget to pack your medicine bag, in fact it should be the first thing that one takes to avoid any difficulties at their destinations.
It is important to adhere to chronic medications during this time. Often people’s routines are changed, and some may forget to take the medications. In addition to adherence to medications, it is also important to be adherent to lifestyle recommendations. Often during this time because there is plenty to eat and drink people forget their diet recommendations. For those that consume alcohol please do so in moderation.
Road traffic accidents unfortunately are at a peak during this time. This is often as a result of reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. It is important to follow road traffic signs, be patient and show respect to other and practice defensive driving. Under no circumstances should one drive under the influence of alcohol. When people go out it is necessary to have a designated driver who will not be under the influence of alcohol.
Multitudes of people will also be travelling locally and internationally for holidays. International travelers should seek pre travel health assessment. This is to ensure they get any necessary vaccinations and prophylactic medications prior to travel. This is particularly important when travelling to malaria endemic areas or countries with yellow fever.
