Great North Eyes Top Four Spot In BRU League

Date:

As the Great North Rugby Team prepares for a crucial home clash in Maun set for this weekend, coach Batshabeng “Bucks” Keopetswe shared insights into the team’s make up and the strategy ahead of their clash with BIUST.

“The first thing I need to point out is the unique setup of the team. It’s a special team made up of players from the North – places where there used to be rugby but it’s not there anymore. Areas like Ghanzi, Kasane, Phikwe, Nata, and Francistown. It is a diverse team,” said Keopetswe.

The team’s next match could determine whether they break into the top four, a feat that would be both symbolic and strategic for rugby in the region.

“We have a lot of work to do to get to the top four but if we play the way we played the last two games, we stand a very fair chance. It would mean a lot to the guys and community. It will also be a chance to show everyone that rugby is also an option to invest in,” he explained.

With most players still young and hungry, Keopetswe has focused his training efforts not just on the field but also on the mindset. “Player mentality. It’s very important that we work on our mental state to help us focus better,” he said.

Playing at home in Maun offers more than just a location advantage, it is a rare chance for the team to perform under less pressure and potentially attract the community’s backing. “For us as a team limited in resources, this is an opportunity to showcase what we can do. It is our belief that if we get local support, we will go far,” he emphasised. “We need the 16th man on our side and that’s the crowd.”

When asked about their opponents, Keopetswe acknowledged the challenge ahead. “Every game has its own challenges but Buist will be a tough nut to crack as they have a strong combination of forwards and running backline.”

Still, Keopetswe is confident in the squad’s youthful energy and raw talent. “Most of the players we have in the team are young and the likes of Strauss boys, Calvin Molamu, and Edmond Kgosietsile to name a few bring in the fresh style of play.”

His message to the fans and the broader Maun community was heartfelt and clear: “Their support is very much needed. We are a team that needs all resources we can get and to really stand a chance, we need the community to help in any form. We struggle with away games and that takes away our chances to really compete fully. I urge all to really come on board and help in any form.”

As the Great North Rugby Team prepares to take the field, one thing is certain; this is not just about one game. It’s about reigniting a northern rugby revival.
