The popular Ginblendon Tennis Tournament is set to return for its third edition later this month, with organisers promising a bigger and better event as they continue using the competition to grow tennis and strengthen community participation in Maun.
Inspired by the world-famous Wimbledon Championships, Ginblendon combines recreational tennis with a relaxed social atmosphere, encouraging players of different skill levels to compete while embracing the tournament’s signature all-white dress code.
Co-organiser and BMC Sports Club tennis coach Thabiso Ofhakae said the event was created to unite the local tennis community in a fun and welcoming environment.
“The primary inspiration was to bring the Maun tennis community together while blending it with the vibrant local gin culture, all inspired by the prestige of Wimbledon. We want to create a relaxed yet competitive environment, building community spirit alongside the love of tennis,” he said.
Registration is already open for both the singles and doubles categories, with organisers reporting encouraging interest ahead of the tournament.
“We are expecting a healthy turnout. Registration has already opened, and we have received a great response so far across both the singles and doubles categories,” Ofhakae said.
One of the tournament’s defining features is its requirement for participants to wear all-white clothing, mirroring one of Wimbledon’s oldest traditions.
“The all-white attire is a direct nod to the Wimbledon Grand Slam, which famously started as an amateur tournament. By incorporating this tradition, we add a touch of class to our event,” he explained.
While organisers are yet to announce the final prize package, Ofhakae assured participants that this year’s rewards will surpass those of the previous edition.
“We have two categories available, singles and doubles. While the final prize details are yet to be confirmed, we can assure participants that it will definitely be better than last year. Above all, this remains a fun tournament. We are looking forward to seeing new faces step onto the court, enjoying the matches and immersing themselves in the unique atmosphere we’re creating,” he said.
Having reached its third edition, Ginblendon has become a regular feature on Maun’s sporting calendar, something organisers hope will continue for years to come.
“This is our third edition, so it has firmly established itself as an annual fixture on our sporting calendar. I hope this tournament continues to grow and serves as a catalyst for the growth of tennis and community sport engagement right here in Maun. The more we get the community involved, the brighter the future of our local sports scene will be,” said Ofhakae.
Last year’s tournament attracted players from across the community, with participants dressed in traditional Wimbledon whites competing in a mixed doubles competition that balanced recreation with spirited competition.
The 2025 title was won by Thabiso Ofhakae and Oratile Rabothako, who defeated Marang Ramahobo and Llewellyn Hamilton 6-2 in the final. The champions received sponsored prizes that included premium Okavango Gin merchandise, bottles of gin, branded T-shirts and sandals.
With growing participation and increasing community interest, this year’s edition is expected to build on that momentum as Ginblendon continues to promote tennis as both a competitive and social sport in Maun.
