The much-anticipated Ginbledon 2025 unfolded in a lively blend of sport and fun, this past weekend, turning the Maun BMC Club into a sea of white. True to its unique identity, the tournament brought together players from all walks of life in an over 18 mixed doubles showdown, all clad in classic Wimbledon-style white for a recreational but highly competitive experience.
While some players teamed up for the first time and others fought through the rounds with tested chemistry, one thing was certain: the energy on the courts was electric. The open-format event emphasised fun as much as competition, with many participants embracing the spirit of togetherness and celebration.
The tournament culminated in a spirited final match, where Thabiso Ofhakae and Oratile Rabothako dominated with a confident 6–2 victory, securing the Ginbledon 2025 title and walking away with premium merchandise courtesy of sponsor Okavango Gin – including bottles of gin, branded t-shirts, and stylish sandals.
Speaking after the match, one of the winners, Oratile Rabothako reflected on the personal significance of the win.
“For me it is an achievement because I have been coaching kids for so long. I have not had much time for myself. This tournament was a mental and physical test. Now, I finally feel relieved. It is my time,” he said, glowing with satisfaction.
When asked how the win would impact his coaching career, Rabothako added: “This has shown me that you can go anywhere you want. No hesitation just show up for every event, every tournament. Keep moving forward as a coach, and you’ll make it.”
The runners-up, Marang Ramahobo and Llewellyn Hamilton, also put in a commendable effort. Hamilton, candid in reflection, admitted,
“The tournament was good, but I honestly didn’t practice much. I know I could have won if I did.” The organiser behind the tournament, Thabiso Ofhakae a tennis coach with BMC Sports Club explained the idea behind Ginbledon.
“This is our second tournament. It’s about bringing the tennis community together and having fun,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of junior tournaments for kids, but this one is for the adults — it’s recreational, it’s social. It gets the parents and older community members involved in the sport.”
The event was not without its perks. Winners walked away with Okavango Gin bottles, branded t-shirts, and other sponsored goodies — a fun and stylish reward for their efforts.
With its laid-back tone, creative flair, and community spirit, Ginbledon 2025 reminded all that the love of the game transcends age and skill level. All you need is a racket, a partner, and maybe a bottle of gin waiting at the finish line.
