Galaxy’s Tough CAF Group Stage Fixture

Jwaneng Galaxy will on the weekend of 24-25 November 2023, travel to Morocco to face the Botola runners up, Wydad Athletic Club (AC) for the CAF Champion League group stage. Wydad plays in the Morocco’s pro league, Botola, the top tier of the Moroccan football league system.

The game will be played at the Stade Mohammed V stadium in Casablanca, and Galaxy will surely not have an easy task against the three time champions of the CAF champions’ league after having won it in 1992, 2017 and 2022 respectively. Wydad are also CAF super cup and African cup champions in 2018 and 2002 respectively hence a challenge awaits Galaxy in Morocco.

In this group B, Galaxy is up against Wydad AC of Moocco, ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast) and Simba FC of Tanzania. The local team will play two home matches against Simba SC on the weekend of 1-2 December 2023 and ASEC Mimosas on the weekend of December 8-9 before travelling for the return leg on the 19th December against the Ivorian ASEC Mimosas at the Stade Robert Champroux stadium.

On the weekend of 23-24 February 2024, Galaxy will welcome the Moroccan Wydad at the national stadium before travelling to Tanzania at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium to face the stubborn Simba SC.

The draw for the group stage was held in Johannesburg, South Africa on the 6th, October 2023 and the 16 winners of the second round were drawn into four groups of four to determine the group stages of the competition.

Meanwhile, in other fixtures, winners of the 2016 edition, Mamelodi Sundowns is in group A, which consists of Egypt’s Pyramids FC, 2015 competition winners TP Mazembe as well as FC Nouadhibou of Mauritania.

Group C consists of Esperance of Tunisia as well as their country-rivals, ES Sahel, Angola’s Atletico Petroleos and the unpredictable Al Hilal of Sudan.  The reigning champions, Al Ahly SC, Algeria’s CR Belouizdad, Tanzania’s Young Africans who finished second in the CAF Confederation Cup as well as Ghana’s Medeama battle it out in Group D.

According to CAF, the winner of the 2023/24 CAF champions league will automatically qualify for the 2024/25 CAF champions league and earn the right to play against the winners of the 2023/24 CAF confederation cup in the 2024 CAF super cup.
