Fraud convict, Kealeboga Molaodi was this week sentenced to six years in prison by the Maun Magistrate’s Court. Molaodi, together with a certain Kagekira Diarenge are said to have on about 26th of Jan-uary 2025 in Maun acted jointly and with common purpose to unlawfully and with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of P320 000 from one, Bruce Cantle.
The duo falsely represented to the complainant words and conduct that they had lawful authority to sell a certain plot in Wenela ward, Maun when in truth they had no such authority and title over the said plot.
Presiding magistrate Chandapiwa Molefi, delivered the verdict this week after Molaodi’s conviction, em-phasising the seriousness of the offence. The sentence will run consecutively with any other current sen-tences he may be serving.
Following the sentencing, Molaodi made a request to the court, seeking permission to attend a medical appointment at Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone on May 8, 2025. He stated that he would not be facing any other charges at that time and requested the magistrate to issue an order facilitating his travel for the appointment.
“I had already spoken to the prison warden about my doctor’s appointment for next month in Marina. However, they have indicated that my relative should bring my medical records to Maun from Gaborone which is expensive rather than taking them to the nearest prison facility in Gaborone,” said Molaodi.
Magistrate Molefi granted the request, ordering that Molaodi be transported to and from Princess Ma-rina Hospital on the specified date. The Botswana Prisons Service in Maun has been instructed to over-see his movement, ensuring he attends the appointment without incident.
Meanwhile, the other accused person involved in the case, Diarenge is yet to be sentenced. The court has scheduled a future hearing for him. In the interim, the Botswana Police Service has been ordered to take his fingerprints to verify whether he is a first-time offender. This verification will play a crucial role in determining his subsequent sentence. All the money they had falsely obtained was confiscated.
