The inaugural Francistown Mayor’s Heritage Walk, under the theme: walk for humanity, know your city, scheduled for October 25 is set to trigger urban tourism by taking walk through the city’s historical sites.
The fund-raising walk is geared towards uplift the lives of the less privileged residents of the second city. Proceeds from the walk will be used to install water system toilets for the under privileged families.
“The purpose of this initiative is to promote healthy living, networking, charity and to improve sanitation services in the three constituencies which make up Francistown. The money raised will go towards building water system toilets in 10 household in each constituency. All in all, 30 families will benefit,” said Mayor Gaone Majere.
Majere said access to proper and functional sanitation is a basic and human right, which every Motswana must have access to.
“In Francistown we have close to 3 000 homes which are not connected to water sewer network. They are still using pit latrines. Through this initiative Council will assist to connect these affected households,” elaborated Francistown Mayor.
The route for the walk consists of the 21 km, 10 km and the 5km all starting from the Council stadium through historical sites dotted across the city.
“The route is definitely going to be adventurous to all the participants young and old as they trek to the Nyangabgwe hill, pass through Ntshe and Tati; the two rivers which meander through Francistown.
Walkers will pass through the WENELA hanger, and the famous White House in blue town which was home of late Namibian President Hage Geingob when he was in exile in Botswana,” continued Majere during a press conference held recently.
Notable partners of the “walk for Humanity, know your city” initiative include Cresta Thapama, Orange Botswana, Jacaranda School, Botswana Oil, Mascom and various businesses.
“I am appealing to residents of Francistown, the private sector, well-wishers, non-governmental organisations, individuals to donate to this worthy cause,” ended Francistown Mayor.
