- – 75-year-old man struck fellow fisherman with metal bar after a squabble
Police in Maun have launched an investigation into a horrific incident that left a 42-year-old man dead. The tragedy occurred after the victim was allegedly struck with a metal bar this past Monday in the Tsanekona area, right along the scenic banks of the Thamalakane River.
Confirming the details of the case, Maun Police Acting Station Commander, Assistant Superintendent Moutlwatsi Ikobeng, stated that the incident was formally reported to his office around 1800hrs.
The report was made by a 75-year-old man, a resident of Tsanekona in Maun, who walked directly to the police station to confess to the offence. According to information provided by Assistant Superintendent Ikobeng, a sudden argument had reportedly erupted between the two men, who are both known residents of Tsanekona, while they were busy fishing along the river.
“The incident reportedly occurred at the location where the two men usually carry out their daily fishing activities together. It is said that the duo had a misunderstanding resulting in a major conflict which ultimately led to the fatal assault,” stated the police boss.
As the personal dispute escalated, the 75-year-old suspect allegedly wielded a heavy object, strongly suspected by authorities to be a metal bar, and launched a brutal assault on the deceased. Assistant Superintendent Ikobeng said the victim sustained severe, catastrophic injuries to both his head and other parts of his body. After receiving the confession, police officers rushed to the riverside scene, where they discovered the victim still clinging to life. He was immediately taken to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital, where he was certified dead later that evening around 2100hrs.
The police investigations are still ongoing to discover exactly what led to the argument, while the body is currently awaiting a post-mortem examination to confirm the cause of death. “The core cause of the conflict that arose between the two, which may have led to the tragic incident, still remains unclear,” Ikobeng stressed. Meanwhile, the accused was arraigned before court on Thursday.
